How to Apply
Your CYM Application Form can be downloaded by following this link or obtained from the Office. It should be completed and returned to the Administrator. Please note that the form includes a section to be completed by the applicant’s school music teacher or headteacher. Auditions Students are offered places at CYM after a successful audition. There is no minimum standard we will audition pupils at all stages of learning other than absolute beginners. Heads of Department are looking for musical potential and take into account the extent of access to musical education that the applicant has had as well as their age and experience. Annual auditions are held toward the end of the spring term each year for entry in the following September *. Auditions are taken by the relevant Head of Department for each instrument and emphasis is put on creating a friendly atmosphere so that applicants feel able to play to the best of their abilities. What will I be asked to play at audition? Applicants should prepare two contrasting pieces (two movements of the same work are acceptable) on their first instrument, and if offering a second instrument, then one piece for that instrument. They may also be asked to do some sight-reading, play some scales and to do some simple listening tests - these may include clapping back a short rhythm pattern played to the applicant, and singing back a short melody. These tests are set according to age and ability. Who will audition me? You will be auditioned by the relevant of Head of Department. If you wish to be considered for a place at CYM to learn more than one instrument you will have to play to more than one person, i.e. the Head of Department for each of the instruments that you play. When will I hear if I have been offered a place? The funding process schedule means that it takes a long time for us to inform applicants of the result of their audition but notification will be given during the summer term. How long will my day be at CYM? Younger and less experienced students can expect to be at the Centre for three to four hours each Saturday. This commitment may well increase as students become more experienced and wish to take part in a wider variety of activities. *Auditions may also be held at other times of the year depending on availability of places and funding (enquiries may be made to the Administrator). |
