CYM Curriculum
A typical timetable might look like this:
09.00 Choir 12.00 Orchestra
10.00 Individual Lesson 13.30 Lunchtime Concert
11.00 Musicianship 14.00 Ensemble
All students participate in a choir, a musicianship class, and where appropriate, at least one instrumental ensemble – the Core Curriculum.

Most students also attend at least one individual lesson with an instrumental/vocal tutor, varying in length according to age and ability (30, 45, or 60 minutes) – the Full Curriculum. At the discretion of the relevant Head of Department pupils may be allowed to continue having instrumental lessons with their own teacher outside the Centre.
CYM ensembles include
Choirs, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Training Orchestra, Brass Band, Dance Band, Jazz Ensemble, Singer/Songwriter Group, chamber music groups and smaller ensembles within each department.

The following instruments are taught at CYM

Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Classical Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Lute, Harp.
Woodwind: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon.
Brass: French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Cornet, Tenor Horn, Baritone, Euphonium.
Others: Piano, Harpsichord, Organ, Recorder, Percussion, and Singing.

Choirs and Musicianship
All CYM students up to the end of Year 10 sing in one of the choirs and attend a Musicianship class as a compulsory part of their musical training. These activities develop crucial skills relevant to all musicians regardless of their instrumental discipline and bring students into contact with one another across all departments.

In years 11-13 students are permitted to opt out of choir and musicianship if they so choose but the majority continue to take advantage of these valuable opportunities.

Further studies

Students may take optional classes in theory and aural training when preparing for external graded examinations.
