Departments and Tutors
On being awarded a place at CYM all students are assigned to a department, depending on which instrument they play. The departments are:
Each is run by a Head of Department who is responsible for building an individual timetable for successful applicants. Heads of Department assign pupils to an appropriate teacher, organise the ensembles within the department, and check the progress of all pupils. ![]() Students meet in Department meetings twice a term. These meetings devote special attention to particular aspects of playing and technique and give further opportunities for informal performances. |

Stephen Dagg has Stephen began his musical life as a chorister at the specialist choir school St.Michael’s College, Tenbury. From there he won a music scholarship to the Kings School, Worcester before graduating from Goldsmiths College, University of London with an honours degree in Music (B.Mus.hons) in 1978. After postgraduate study, Stephen spent six years as a music teacher at the John Roan Comprehensive School in Greenwich. In 1985, Stephen was appointed to the Inner London Education Authority Music Service with responsibility for the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and other training ensembles, together with a brief to develop links between the capital’s professional performing world and the education service. In 1990 he was appointed Deputy Director of the Centre for Young Musicians before succeeding Peter Shave as Director in 1993. |
