Pupil Progress
The progress of all pupils at the CYM is carefully monitored throughout the time that they are at the Centre. Heads of Department are kept informed of pupils’ work and frequently discuss progress with pupils, tutors and parents alike. Tutors
write an Annual Report on each pupil which is distributed to parents, schools and funding bodies.

CYM Assessments
In addition CYM also hold annual assessments. These involve pupils playing to the relevant Head of Department. Pupils are expected to play two pieces, prepared scales and a short piece of sight-reading. Students taking public exams in Years 11,12, and 13 are normally exempt from annual assessments. Other pupils who would be unlikely to be assessed in this way would be those who have recently taken a graded exam or those who have performed in a CYM lunchtime concert.

In the rare cases of pupils failing to progress satisfactorily Heads of Department will be involved in first helping students to resolve any difficulties they may face.

External Examinations
It is likely that students will enter graded exams during their
time at CYM.

Pupils can be entered for external exams only when the teacher decides it is appropriate. No CYM pupil can enter themselves privately without the full consent of their teacher and Head of Department.

Associated Board exams are taken during each half-term holiday. The full payment for the exam entry fee must be paid by parents before the end of the previous term.

Some tutors prefer to use Trinity Guildhall Board. Special arrangements are made regarding dates for exams with
these boards.

All pupils entering external examinations will be given help with aural and theory requirements, and be provided with an accompanist when needed.

Pupils are encouraged to perform in a lunchtime concert as part
of their preparation for an exam as this can help to develop performance skills and confidence about playing in public.
